On occasion a Brown Pelican will grace us with his presence on the back bay. He sits comfortably and doesn’t appear disturbed by the closeness of humans or a camera. I finally broke down and bought 3 books to help me identify and provide more information on the birds I’m photographing. This will help me provide you with some fun details about each bird – sort of like my birding friend H.J. Ruiz who has a great birding blog at: http://avian101.wordpress.com/ and who has inspired me.
This is a Juvenile Pacific Coast Brown Pelican. It seems that many of the birds in our area are now in the juvenile stage and learning many new skills taught to them by their parents. The Brown Pelican is smaller and more slender than the White Pelican and more agile in flight, but still a very large and ponderous bird with the trademark pelican bill. (The Sibley Guide to Birds).
